Meet The Team
Idrees Malyar
Director of the Water Resilience Tracker
Organization: Alliance for Global Water Adaptation
As the Water Resilience Tracker Director, Idrees leverages his extensive experience and strategic vision to support the global initiative to better integrate water into national climate planning through strategic partnerships and direct engagement with governments.
The Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA) is overseeing the development of the Water Resilience Tracker in collaboration with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Deltares and Arup. Other partners have included Sanitation and Water for All (SWA), the Global Water Partnership (GWP), and UNICEF.
The Water Resilience Tracker is currently working closely with a number of countries across Latin America, Asia, and Africa who are committed to strengthening water resilience in their national climate planning. Implementation of the Water Tracker is guided through close collaboration with stakeholders to ensure project outcomes are in line with on-the-ground needs of countries and reflect an approach which is applicable and scalable for country use.
The initiative has received support from UK aid through the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office of the UK Government, the Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Inter-American Development Bank, The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and UNDP.

In 2021 AGWA launched a new tool called the Water Tracker for National Climate Planning, with support from FCDO, the dozens of countries in the Adaptation Action Coalition, and our partners at Sanitation and Water for All (SWA), the Global Water Partnership (GWP), and UNICEF.
Between 2021 and 2022, the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA) and partners led the development of and piloted the Water Tracker's framework through an iterative process with more than ten countries including Egypt, Costa Rica, Somalia, Malawi, Nepal, Palestine, Panama, Nigeria, and Brazil.
The Water Resilience Tracker is now part of the UK Government’s Just Transitions for Water Security (JTWS) programme which draws together complimentary strategies to improve the capabilities of local and national policy makers to build climate resilience and water security. It aims to strengthen institutions, technical capacity, and governance; build the market conditions and incentives for investment in water; and ensure delivery of sustainable water stewardship.
